ZOOMA Women's Race Series, a national series of women's half marathon running events presented by New Balance, announced today that Sara Massengill will be joining ZOOMA as Associate Director of Events.

Prior to joining ZOOMA, Sara was the brand manager for the St. Jude Heroes charity athlete program with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.  During her 1.5 years with the program, Sara more than doubled the number of St. Jude Heroes participants nationally, increasing program revenue by $1 million.  She managed approximately 20 events in which St. Jude Heroes athletes participated and worked with regional staff to increase Heroes’ participation and fundraising by 60% for the 2008 St. Jude Memphis Marathon, the program’s premier endurance race.

Growing up in a small town in Arkansas, Sara was actively involved in many sports including equestrian events. She was an all-conference basketball player and a member of her school’s volleyball and track teams. She has maintained her active lifestyle as an adult, competing in many half marathons, several triathlons and her first gran fondo cycling race in Lucca, Italy in summer 2009.

Nearly 3,000 Women Run to Celebrate Fit Friendships
Over $10,000 donated to Girls on the Run Annapolis

June 12, 2009, ANNAPOLIS, MD:  On May 31, nearly 3,000 women achieved challenging fitness goals and finished a half marathon or 10K road race in Annapolis.  Selling out in its second year, the ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon & 10K race brought thousands of women to Annapolis for a weekend of running and celebration. Unlike most road races, 30% of ZOOMA runners have never run a race. Hundreds of women like Meg Edwards, a 33 year-old mother of three and new runner, achieved something they have never attempted before.

Edwards is a typical ZOOMA runner. With twin three-year-olds and a 14 month-old, time to work out is not easy to come by. In January 2009, exercising with a group of local moms and never having entered a race, Edwards decided to tackle the challenge of the ZOOMA Annapolis 10K. Each week while her 3-year old twins attended preschool, Edwards met with another stay-at-home mom to train. Now, 27 pounds lighter and with ample training miles under her belt, Edwards has run a 10K race.

“As a mom you are so busy thinking of everyone else’s needs,” Edwards said of her decision to commit to health and run the ZOOMA Annapolis10K. “Nobody else is going to do it for you.”

Edwards is only one of thousands of women who ran in ZOOMA Annapolis, presented by New Balance. All race finishers received a commemorative necklace after crossing the finish line, and over $10,000 was donated to Girls on the Run Annapolis, the race’s 2009 official charity partner.

“We are thrilled with the success of the second ZOOMA Annapolis race,” said Brae Blackley, Executive Director for ZOOMA Women’s Race Series. “The popularity of ZOOMA Annapolis proves that women like Meg are eager for opportunities to get fit and healthy in a fun and inspiring way – creating or strengthening fit friendships that will keep them motivated all year long.”

Designed to inspire women to lead healthy lives with more perks and bigger parties, ZOOMA Women’s Race Series events have seen success in cities around the country.  In 2008, nearly 4,000 women participated in ZOOMA events, and in April of this year, an event in Austin, Texas attracted 2,000 women. In fall 2009, ZOOMA races will be held in Denver, Colorado (September 20) and Atlanta, Georgia (November 8).

Like its sister events in other active cities, the ZOOMA Annapolis race invites women to indulge in a healthy and energizing weekend. The Annapolis race was held on Sunday, May 31, 2009 starting from the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in downtown Annapolis. Participants ran over the Naval Academy Bridge before finishing waterfront on the Severn River. Spectators and participants enjoyed a huge post-race party in the Stadium end zone including live music from the Doug Segree Band, shopping, catered lunch, wine courtesy of Barefoot Wines & Bubbly, and spa treatments sponsored by Varuna Salon Spa.

Girls on the Run Annapolis is a non-profit educational and running program for pre-adolescent girls (ages 8-13) that strengthens girls physically, emotionally, and socially in preparation to face the upcoming pressures of adolescence.  Founded in 2005, GOTR Annapolis currently serves nearly 200 girls at eight program locations in Anne Arundel County. GOTR participants will be volunteering at a water stop along the race course, and a volunteer will be available at the race expos to educate ZOOMA participants about GOTR programs and volunteer opportunities.

Running: Weekend's ZOOMA Races Were Run Smoothly

Evan Thomas, Annapolis Capital Gazette

The forecast appeared to be perfect at the pre-race gathering at Fado Irish Pub on Saturday.

The surprise showers that rumbled though town about 6 a.m. Sunday created some super-sized puddles at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, but barely dampened the enthusiasm of the almost 3,000 runners gathered to run the 2nd ZOOMA Half Marathon and 10K runs (presented by New Balance) that went off just after 7 a.m. ...

ZOOMA Austin Half Marathon & 5K Announces a New Partnership with Nest, Inc.
Nonprofit Organization to Supply Hand-Made Necklaces from Guatemala

March 12, 2009 - Washington, D.C.:  Today the ZOOMA Austin Half Marathon & 5K announced its partnership with Nest, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the lives of women in developing countries.  ZOOMA Austin Half Marathon & 5K, a ZOOMA Women’s Race Series event, is part of a national race series that encourages women to train for and accomplish challenging fitness goals.  Among the perks of ZOOMA races are necklaces given to half marathon finishers in lieu of traditional finisher medals.  At ZOOMA Austin on April 4, 2009, Nest will supply the finishers’ gift, a unique, engraved silver necklace hand-made by women artisans in Guatemala.

“We are excited about this great partnership,” said Brae Blackley, executive director and founder of ZOOMA Women’s Race Series. “This is unique opportunity for ZOOMA to support women’s groups in Guatemala and provide meaningful commemorative prizes to our race finishers.  ZOOMA Austin finishers will leave the race with a reminder of their accomplishment that is also a tribute to the work of women artisans.”

Nest uses micro-credit loans, a financial innovation that allows poor women the opportunity to become self-sufficient by providing them with small loans to create sustainable entrepreneurial businesses, and creates markets for established women’s artisan groups to sell their products abroad. The ZOOMA Austin necklaces will be crafted in Guatemala according to accepted fair trade principles, and will be presented at the ZOOMA Austin finish line to half marathon participants in hand-made pouches made of Guatemala fabric scraps.

“Our shared interest in the success of women here and abroad has created this unique partnership,” said Nest founder Rebecca Kousky.  “We are excited about the opportunity to support the health and well-being of women in Austin, Guatemala, and beyond.”
